Bulletin 12th Feb 2017 – 6th Sun in OT – Jesus’ deeper teaching

harold_copping_the_sermon_on_the_mount_525

“…It was said to your fathers, …  but I am telling you…” (Mt 5.20ff)

 Jesus is God.

He has re-written the Old Law without doing away with it: “I came not to abolish the Law, but to fulfil it”

Jesus’ teaching goes to the heart of the Old Testament teaching; he reveals the true meaning of each of the situations; by this he invites us to go deeper than the scribes and Pharisees. “If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.”

Do not kill

Jesus says: Don’t even get angry or you will answer before the court!

Do not commit adultery

Jesus says: Don’t even look twice at a person with lustful thoughts or you have sinned.

Do not break your oath

Jesus says: Don’t even swear at all (except if a judge tells you in court), because if you are a person of honour, your “Yes” will mean yes; and your “No” will mean no. To go beyond that is to sin.
