ST JOSEPH MODEL FOR ALL MEN

Patron Saint of Workers: Often we men struggle to work in a way that honours God. St Joseph can teach us how to work well if we ask him. Start your day with a prayer to him:   St Joseph, help me praise the Lord through my work today. Thank you.

Powerful Intercessor: St Teresa of Avila says ‘of this glorious saint my experience is that he helps us in ALL our necessities. Jesus wishes to teach us that just as He was subject to Joseph his guardian on earth, likewise in Heaven, when Joseph asks a request on our behalf, Jesus willingly obeys i.e. grants his request.’      St Teresa’s advice: ‘Go to Joseph.’

Model of fatherhood: God chose Joseph from all men to be the foster-father of Jesus. He served and protected Jesus and Mary, and taught Jesus in his humanity how to be a man. He models well for us fathers how to be the spiritual leaders of our families. Like him, let us show the love of God the Father to our wives and children.

Obedient man: Every time God asked him to do something, Joseph was eager to say yes. Whether taking his unexpectedly pregnant Mary as his wife, heading to Bethlehem for the census, fleeing with Mary and Jesus to Egypt from Herod, or returning to Israel from exile. In our age of ‘I’ll do it my way’, Joseph is the great reminder that true greatness is found in following God’s will, not our own.

Man of silence: Not a word spoken by Joseph is recorded in the Bible, for he was a man of great silence. By his silence, he was able to hear God’s voice and discern His will for the Holy Family. In this age of unceasing noise and chatter, Joseph reminds us that if we wish to hear God’s voice, we must quieten our hearts and enter into silence every day.

Go to Joseph! “Some saints are privileged to extend to us their patronage with particular efficacy in certain needs, but not in others; but St Joseph has the power to assist us in all cases, in every necessity, in every undertaking.” – St Thomas Aquinas.
