Bulletin 31st July 2016 – 18th Sun. of OT – Parable of the rich fool

Luke 12.20

Did you know that if you earn just $40,500 a year, you are among the richest 5% of people in the world? 95% of the population of the world is poorer than you. That is food for thought.

The following statement of a missionary priest startled his congregation: “What you don’t need doesn’t belong to you; it belongs to the poor.”

When we have appeals of so many kinds to help the poor, such ideas should help us to be generous.

The same Irish missionary priest was home on leave visiting his family when they told him of an elderly neighbour who was dying and who wished to see him. The old man seemed agitated and told the priest he was very afraid to die. The priest tried to reassure him because of his long faith-filled life. He was not consoled. Eventually he told the priest his worry: “Father, I still have £500 in the bank and I don’t need it, and I can’t use it, and I am afraid of Jesus’ judgment on these riches.”

Faith leads to a relationship with God and to a relationship with God’s poor, our brothers and sisters in need. It challenges us to develop both. … St Vincent de Paul, ‘Ladles of Love’, ‘Wrap with love’, these and other corporal works of mercy are always within our reach.     As Mother Teresa teaches us:

Mother Teresa lOVE IN ACTION

Today’s gospel parable is powerful

“…So it is when a man stores up treasure for himself in place of making himself rich in the sight of God.”

Being ‘rich in the sight of God’ is having a strong relationship with Jesus and a strong relationship with your neighbour through corporal works of mercy – active compassionate charity.
