2016 Australian Election Issues
(C Gordon, in Catholic Weekly, 05.06.2016 p.24)
The proposed redefinition of marriage is the central life issue for Christians to consider in the lead-up to the federal election. There will be serious consequences for churches and individuals if same-sex marriage becomes legal in Australia.
Parties on Redefinition
Labor, under Bill Shorten, has promised to hold a parliamentary vote very early in the next parliament. Mr Shorten has promised to deliver same-sex marriage by 10 October, 2016. The Greens, under Richard Di Natale hold the same position.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his Liberal/National coalition are bound to hold a plebiscite on this issue soon after the election. At the very least, the Libs are courteous enough to allow the Australian people a say on this controversial proposal.
Labor has stipulated that there will be no exemptions for religions under their model for same-sex marriage laws. This means that no dissension from the LGBTIQ agenda will be tolerated. Bill Shorten has dodged questions on exactly how he would restrict religious liberty. Most likely anyone publicly expressing the view that marriage is between a man and a woman will be fined under anti-discrimination law. …
..If I was working in the wedding industry, I would be very worried right now. Christian venue operators, bakers, printers, limousine drivers, photographers and florists will all be fined and vilified for any failure to service same-sex weddings.
…Bill Shorten and Richard Di Natale will force Christian churches to marry same-sex couples. Other religious denominations will be compelled to do the same. This rigid and unjust approach would see the churches resort to tearing up marriage licences. – Chris Gordon (Director Sydney Archdiocese Life Marriage & Family Centre)
