Snippets of St Mary’s History (cont.)
REGAN FAMILY: Tom Regan left Galway in 1853 at 15 years of age, and, on arriving in Australia, went to Ballarat goldfields. He tried his luck in Bendigo, Bathurst and New Zealand, and settled in Corowa about 1868.
He established a property at Pinegrove, and married Ellen Monahan in 1882. They reared 7 children, Jack who married Maggie Dunleavy, but ill health saw him to move to town and he died at age 46. Bill passed away at 27 from typhoid fever and Mick and Jim at age 61.
The three women all lived to 80. Annie married and lived in Sydney (1 daughter Mary), Ellen married the local vet, Jim Crisfield, and their daughter is Mary Fitzgibbon. The third sister, Mary (Sis), did not marry.
Jim married Lucy Whitty and they had four children – Kevin, John, Mary (all deceased) and Jim.
Two of Kevin’s family – Pat (at ‘Uralla’) and Kerrie Ormond live locally. Jim married Jan and their daughter, Ruth Parkinson, teaches at St Mary’s school. Jim and Jan’s other children live in Melbourne.
Tom Regan’s brother Michael came to Australia in the 1870s and, with help from Tom, settled on a property next to Pinegrove. He married and had one son James.
Michael and his wife left the farm to his son and retired to Wangaratta.
James eventually sold the farm and retired to Corowa where he lived for some years with his wife Nellie and their son, Dalton, and daughter, ‘Marj’ (Ellen Marjorie). (1917 family picture below).
Marj worked all her life with local solicitors Nicholson and Lethbridge, eventually retiring in her 80s. She was a keen golfer and bowler and was a very strong supporter of the church and community, and passed away in her 101st year on 7th March 2011. [Notes – Jim Regan] (Click link for picture.
