PASSION SUNDAY – Year C
“…Christ became obedient for us…”
Thought for the week: “Lord, in your death is my life. With all my heart, I thank you.”
GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION FOR HOLY LAND
In accord with Papal instructions, money obtained from the collection is divided between the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and the Latin patriarchate (35%) and the Custody of the Holy Land (65%).
CUSTODY OF HOLY LAND includes:
- 74 Biblical Shrines
- 24 Parishes
- 19 Religious centres
- 22 Schools
- 6 Orphanages and refuges
- 4 ‘Casa Nova’ Guest Houses
- 3 Charitable Programs: Rental assistance, educational scholarships, and Medical centres
- 5 Institutions: Franciscan Biblical Centre, Christian Information Centre, Jerusalem Theological Seminary, and Franciscan printing Press, Centre for Oriental Christian Studies.
“The annual collection for the support of the Church in the Holy Land takes place on Good Friday. It promotes the missionary work of the Church there by providing welfare assistance to local Christians in areas such as health, education, employment and housing…
“Last year (2015) Australian Catholics donated $1.4 million to this cause, despite tough economic times (in Australia). Please remember the Christians of the Holy Land again on this Good Friday. Please also pray for peace in the birthplace of Jesus.”
RINGING FOR ST MARY’S BELL
St Mary’s church bell is currently located in the safekeeping of Wayne Wilson’s storage yard.
An odd place for a church bell? It is! However, the story behind its removal from beside St Mary’s is that, during the presbytery renovations, the decision was made to temporarily relocate it there until its future use and location at the church was clarified. At the time of its removal, it was no longer usable, several key parts having seriously deteriorated.
If the bell is to be restored, the bill is likely to be around $30,000. This is a realistic estimate given the condition of the bell and need for a new bell tower. Clearly this would make a worthy special appeal leading up to the centenary celebrations of the opening of our beautiful St Mary’s church in 2021.
All ideas and suggestions on this topic are most welcome…
