WAGGA WAGGA DIOCESE CENTENARY
HISTORY PROJECT
Ideas & Help?? Along with all the parishes of Wagga Diocese, we are asked to contribute facts and figures about St Mary’s Corowa and our local churches Coreen, Ringwood and Balldale.
The basic history of the parish was written by Mr Roddy covering 1878-1978, but we need to supplement it with the years 1979 – 2016, adding facts and tales – old and new – of St Mary’s parish.
If you can help, please put ideas down on paper and we will submit them to Fr Justin Darlow (Ganmain) who is in charge of gathering the research.
Wagga celebrates its centenary as a diocese in 2017. Thank you for your help.
STORIES Perhaps this story rings a bell with some of you! It is said that when World War II ended, one Tommy O’Brien rang St Mary’s big church bell for hours on end.
However, a parishioner recently questioned that story and said it was not Tommy but another parishioner. Do you know who it really was? … Or, were there two bellringers exhausted that day?
(… Where is that sacred bell now? – What’s the story behind its removal?)
FACTS & FIGURES have their place, but they are not the flesh and blood that bring colour and life to the narrative. Personal stories (corroborated where possible!) lend humour and insight into the faith and humanity of parishioners past and present and their rightful place in our history.
