33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE LAST DAYS
Jesus’ words at the end of today’s gospel are a clear call to everyone to live life with care, “…as for that day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son; no one but the Father.”
In the face of death, which is coming to us all, we should be confident that “perfect love drives out all fear” (1 Jn 4.18). Then the challenge becomes how to perfect our love for God and neighbour?
Therese of Lisieux had the secret: Trust. She taught her novices that if we trust God fully, we will not even have to pass through Purgatory! But she did not let them be lax!
Therese lived in France then still suffering Jansenist excesses that taught we had to store up many merits to get to heaven. But she learnt through her own childhood suffering and healing (at age 14) that we can basically do nothing to help ourselves – we must depend on God totally.
That was the foundation for her “Little Way” [do even small things with love] which ultimately earned her the title Doctor of the Church.
(EMPTY) I.E. HANDS FREE HEAVEN
One day towards the end of Therese’s life, her sister Pauline (now Mother Agnes of Jesus) lamented having no good works to offer to God on Judgment Day.
Therese considered herself “in the same circumstances.” (But) it did not perturb her. Since she could give God nothing, he would supply everything. Here is what she said:
As far as little ones are concerned, they will be judged with great gentleness… ‘At the end, the Lord will rise up to save the gentle and the humble of the earth.’ It doesn’t say ‘to judge’; but ‘to save.’” (Last Conversations, 67).
