32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE WIDOW’S MITE
“This poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others, poor as she is, she put in all she had…” Mk 12.43-44.
“As the Lord lives,” (the widow) replied “I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jug; I am just gathering a stick or two to go and prepare this for myself and my son to eat, and then we shall die.” I Kg 17.12.
There are few situations in life that are more heart-rending than a poor widow (or single mother) struggling to support herself and her child(ren).
In the Gospels, Jesus’ avowed preference for the poor is abundantly clear: they lack the leverage of ‘friends I high places’ and are thrown on their own resources and on the goodness of others to survive.
St Vincent de Paul Society could tell us a thousand stories of broken hearts ending in broken homes and poverty and of the hourly struggles to put food on the table.
The recent appeals to support the missions in Hall’s Creek and the poor in Madagascar received a generous response from our parishioners. But our generosity can go further: include them – and all the poor of our world in our daily prayers and be alert to help the needy in Corowa.
Our members of St Vincent de Paul are constantly on call to support poor families and individuals and we can do our part by donations in kind or in cash to its members or to the box at the back of the church.
In December, we will once again have the Christmas Giving Tree food & toys hamper appeal, and you may like to think ahead and purchase items for that. Every little helps.
