Jesus and the rich young man [Detail of Heinrich Hoffman]
27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Yr. B
Prayer for the Synod on the Family
“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendour of true love, to you we turn with trust.
Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches.
Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalised find ready comfort and healing.
Holy family of Nazareth, may the Synod of Bishops make us once more mindful of the sacredness of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and …

ABOUT THE SYNOD – POPE FRANCIS
‘A PROTECTED SPACE’
The Synod of Bishops is not a place for reaching agreement but a “protected space in which the Church experiences the action of the Holy Spirit,” Pope Francis told delegates gathered for the first working session of the Synod.
‘NOT A TALKING SHOP’
“I would like to remind you that the Synod is not a convention or a talking shop, nor is it a parliament or senate where people reach agreement,” Pope Francis told the delegates, “…but the Church that walks together to read reality with the eyes of faith and with the heart of God.”
‘..A LIVING SPRING’
The Synod, he said, was “the Church that questions itself as to its fidelity to the deposit of the faith, so that it does not become a museum to be looked at or conserved, but a living spring from which the Church drinks to quench thirst and to show up the source of life.”
GOD ALWAYS SURPRISES US
Francis used his opening reflection to clear the ground for what he described as “a protected space in which the Church experiences the action of the Holy Spirit,” which “speaks through the language of all the people who allow themselves to be guided by the God who always surprises us.”
[N.B. This Synod is not doctrinal, but pastoral, and will thus NOT change Church doctrine – Have no fear!]
