THEME: The Faith of Peter … Are you willing to ‘walk on water’?

Each time this Gospel is read at Mass, I cannot help but wonder at the astonishing faith of Peter. He had seen Jesus do miracles, yes. They included feeding 5,000, healing the sick, even raising the dead to life. But in the midst of a gale on Lake Galilee, when a ghostly figure appears on the water, would I shout ‘If it is really you, Lord, tell me to come to you on the water’ and then, thinking I heard “Come!” step onto the rolling waves?

What an interesting man Peter was!

Peter is obedient. ‘Come and follow me.’ And at once (Peter and Andrew) left their nets and followed him.’

Peter is practical. “Master, we worked hard all night long and have caught nothing. But if you say so, I will pay out the nets.”

Peter astonishes with: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Here Jesus comments, “It was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you, but my Father in Heaven.” Peter was clearly inspired by God at that moment.

Peter is awestruck. “Lord, let us make three tents here: one for You, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” And the gospel writer comments: ‘He did not know what he was saying.’

Peter is passionate: “Peter drew his sword and cut off the ear of the High Priest’s servant.”

Peter is fearful: “Woman, I don’t know what you are talking about: I don’t know the man.”

Peter is repentant. And a third time Jesus asked, ‘Simon Peter, do you love me?’ Peter was aggrieved that Jesus asked him a third time and he answered, ‘Lord, you know everything. You know I love You.’

Peter is so human, so fragile, so prone to mistakes, so good-hearted, so open to Jesus, that we can find great inspiration in his willingness to ‘walk on water’ to get to Jesus. It was his love made him willing to walk on water to get to him. How deep is my love?

We might ask ourselves: Would I be willing, even now, after years of going to Mass and years of prayer, would I be willing to step out of a boat and walk towards Jesus if He called me?

This gospel  invites us to pray for a stronger faith in Jesus, a faith willing to ‘walk on water’.
