THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
GENDERCIDE – A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY
Cardinal George Pell (May 2013)
ABORTION & INFANTICIDE BECAUSE IT’S A GIRL
We are rightly scandalised when an unborn girl is aborted because she is a girl. This is abhorrent. It is yet another reason majority opinion in Australia is uneasy about the huge number of abortions. Unborn baby boys should be safe too.
UN FIGURES – 200 MILLION GIRLS MISSING
Worldwide, the abortion and infanticide of baby girls has resulted in the elimination of 200 million women.
FILM: “IT’S A GIRL” – MOVES TO TEARS
The Archdiocese of Sydney recently hosted the screening of the film It’s A Girl, and its tagline claimed these are “the three deadliest words in the world today”. This confronting account of the phenomenon of “gendercide” and the courage of those who try to resist pressures to kill their daughters moved many to tears.
HOW MANY IN AUSTRALIA?
We do not know how many unborn children in Australia are aborted because of their sex. But disturbing evidence from analysis of newborn sex ratios among some ethnic communities in Canada, the US and Britain suggests it may be occurring here, too.
EVERY LIFE IS PRECIOUS
It would be enormously callous to propose that as long as our national sex ratio is OK then it does not matter if there is some sex disparity within certain population groups here. Every unborn life is important. The lack of data on abortion in Australia is a scandal.
AUST. GOVT DATA LACKING
Countries such as Britain collect and make available data on abortion in a way that protects the privacy of both women and families. This data includes age, ethnicity and relationship status of the mother, gestation of the unborn child, reason for the abortion and number of previous abortions. Why don’t we?
AUSTRALIA CAN DO BETTER
Australia must do better in assisting pregnant women and providing them with the support they need to be able to continue their pregnancies. However, good policy-making needs sound data. A 2008 federal inquiry recommended that states and territories collect such information. Regrettably, this has not yet happened.
NSW ALONE – 82 BABIES ABORTED EVERY DAY!
Tragically, in NSW, 82 babies are lost to abortion each day. Who are they and why? All Australians should support legislative and educational efforts to ensure unborn children are not denied the right to live because they are girls. [The Telegraph NEWS 05.05.2013]
