Jn XXIII & JP II images9ZN5YO5Z

[Click the names to read the short Vatican biographies.]

It is no small privilege to have lived as contemporaries of the two newly canonised saints St John XXIII and St John Paul II. Their leadership of the Church took place during our remarkable times.

Pope John 23rd summoned all the bishops to Rome – all 2,000 of them! – for the Second Vatican Council, which promulgated great documents to help the Church address a fast-changing modern world.

Many historians attribute the fall of Russian & Eastern European Communism to Pope John Paul II’s interventions and his strong support for ‘Solidarity’ in Poland. These two great men offer us food for thought.

[Next Sunday this column will feature Pope Francis’ words about the two saints from his Homily during the Mass of canonisation on 27.04.2014 in Rome.]
