Mary Monica Hingston (nee O’Shanassy) was born in Corowa in 1917, but moved when still a child to Melbourne. The account was supplied by George Johnson, son of Mary Monica’s first husband, Bill Johnson.
COROWA BAPTISMAL RECORDS
After receiving this information a search of the parish Baptismal records show a “Mary Monica O’Shanassy” was baptised at St Mary’s Star of the Sea, Corowa on 28th January 1917.
Her godparents were James Naughtin and Maggie Naughtin; the celebrant for the baptism was Fr Patrick Hickey. In 1917, the old St Mary’s church was still in use. The new one was built and blessed by Archbishop Daniel Mannix just four years later.]

“George’s Mum, (Mary) Monica Hingston died recently, on the 13th November 2013. She was 96 years & 10 months old and the last of the siblings to die. Up until a couple of weeks before her death she was living in Neil Crt Mulgrave with her husband Athol, ( aged 91 yrs) who had been taking great care of her.
‘Nan Monica’ moved into the J R Hannah Hostel ( Mulgrave) a couple of weeks before she died, as she needed extra care and facilities. As she said a few weeks before her death: “ I have had a good innings , I have had two wonderful marriages, I have a wonderful husband, a lovely family and so many blessings.” Monica and Bill had 4 children, Maureen, Desmond, Leo and George.
A few family background facts –
Mary Monica O’ Shanassy was born 10th January, 1917 at Corowa.
Her parents were Mary Amy Amelia Hicks, born 22 June, 1881- died 18th June 1959 and Edward Henry O’Shanassy.
Edward was the 5th child of Thomas and Mary O’Shanassy. He was born on 18th August 1869 (died 8th Oct 1957) and at aged 33 yrs, married Mary Amy Amelia Hicks ( then 21 yrs) at the Sacred heart Church at Yarrawonga- 8th Sept 1902.
SAVERNAKE, COROWA & MELBOURNE
Edward and Amelia (‘Millie’) built their home on a property called ‘Rowena’, north of Mulwala on the road to Savernake. They lived on the property for ten years before moving to Corowa, NSW, where they ran a wood yard for many years. Edward and Amelia and their eight children then moved to Melbourne where they lived in Athol St, Moonee Ponds for more than thirty years.
EDWARD AND MILLIE’S FAMILY
Their children were –
Thomas Edward born 17 July 1903, (buried at Footscray cemetery)
Walter Charles born 15th September 1905, (buried at Fawkner cemetery),
Edward (‘Eddie’) born 1907 and died as a young man aged 19 yrs in 1927 – buried at Fawkner cemetery. Eddie had been training as a religious brother up to 6 months before he died. His health was poor so he came out of training and died of cancer.
Francis Joseph born 15th April 1911. Frank died 26 May 1977 aged 66 and is buried in the Highton Cemetery, South Geelong.
Bernard Alphonsus born on 4th February 1914, died at the age of 68 on 12th August 1982 and is buried in Koroit near Warrnambool Vic.
‘MONICA’ – the Rose among six brothers
Mary Monica (known to all as ‘Monica’) was born 10th January 1917 and married William ( Bill) John Johnson, ( born 23/2/1914) who died suddenly while holidaying at Port Douglas QLD, 15 April 1977.
Monica remarried on 26th November 1982 ( At St John Vianney Church Mulgrave) to a wonderful man, Athol George Hingston, who still survives her and is missing her greatly, as she died recently on the 13th November 2013.
